What are the elements?
Elements are building blocks from which everything in the universe is made of.
1 of 21
How many elements are there?
There are over 100 elements.
2 of 21
How are all the elements organised?
Elements are listed on the periodic table.
3 of 21
Elements and symbols.
Each element has it's own symbol eg. Au which is the symbol for Gold
4 of 21
What do elements contain and what are called.
Elements contain particles and they are called atoms.
5 of 21
How many different kinds of atom does each element contain?
Each element contains only one kind of atom.
6 of 21
Name the three different states that elements can be in at room temperature.
The main three sates are solid, liquid and gas. (room temperature is about 20 degrees C)
7 of 21
Name the two elements that are liquid at room temperature.
The only two elements that are liquid at room temperature are the metal called mercury and the non-metal bromine.
8 of 21
What are the two types of elements?
The two types are metals and non-metals.
9 of 21
What is the only non-metal that does conduct electricity?
Carbon in its graphite form.
10 of 21
What is not a good way to tell the difference between metals and non-metals?
Magnetism. Because not all metals are magnetic.
11 of 21
What is sulphur at room temperature and is it a metal?
Sulphur is a non-metal and is a yellow solid at room temperature.
12 of 21
What colour is oxygen and what state is it in?
Oxygen is a colourless gas and is a non-metal
13 of 21
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance that is made from more than one kind of atom joined together.
14 of 21
What happens when a chemical reaction takes place?
A new substance is always formed.
15 of 21
What is formed when elements react together?
A compound is formed when elements react together.
16 of 21
Does a compound behave like the elements it is formed by?
No. It contains different properties.
17 of 21
What are key signs of a chemical reaction?
Bubbles (gas), an energy change, colour change, a precipitate (solid) forms in solution.
18 of 21
how would you name copper and chlorine in a compound?
Copper chloride. This because there are two elements so it ends with IDE and the metal part comes first.
19 of 21
Compounds can be represented by a chemical formula. What is a chemical formula
a chemical formula shows you what elements are in the compound and how many of each element there are in the compound. For example sodium chloride has sodium and chlorine.
20 of 21
How can compounds be split up into their elements?
Compounds can be split up into their elements using electricity.
