Define wave frequency...
... the number of waves per minute
1 of 13
Define wave crest....
...The highest point of the wave
2 of 13
What is the energy a wave possesses determined by?
>Wind velocity(wind speed), >Duration (Period of time during which the wind blew) and >Fetch (Distance over which the wind blew)
3 of 13
Define wavelength....
.. the distance between two successive crests
4 of 13
What characteristics do constructive waves have?
>Longer wavelengths, >lower height, >lower wave frequency, >Greater swash than backwash, sediment is added to the beach
5 of 13
What characteristics do destructive waves have ?
>steeper, shorter wavelength, >More frequent waves, >strong backwash (associated with storm conditions)
6 of 13
When does wave refraction occur?
When waves approach an irregular coastline with headlands and bays, causing more frictional drag in some places than others
7 of 13
What is happening with the moon and sun during spring tides?
The moon and sun are in line with each other to combine their gravitational pull to crate the biggest 'bulge' (highest high tide, lowest low tide )
8 of 13
Describe the Freeze-thaw process
water repeatedly freezes and melts within joints/cracks in rocks, happens in areas where diurnal range hovers around 0degrees. Water expands when frozen causes pressure on rock and pieces of rock therefore break off.
9 of 13
When does 'Pressure-release' happen?
When jointed rocks have the pressure of any overburden removed and expansion can further open up cracks to weathering
10 of 13
What is biological weathering?
weathering as a result from organic agents, ie tree roots growing/animals burrowing
11 of 13
Describe soil creep
>slowest type of mass movement(less than 1cm p/a) >happens due to raindrop impact in intense storms, >Wet periods and >Freeze-thaw
12 of 13
What are earthflows and mudflows?
faster movements which happen on steeper slopes which have become saturated
