unit 1 chapter 4(science b)

?
whats biomass?
this is mass of all living material found in an ecosystem
1 of 12
whats the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide+water= glucose +oxygen
2 of 12
whats the equation for respiration?
glucose+oxygen= carbon dioxide and water
3 of 12
how do you calculate energy transferred?
energy transferred= energy taken in-energy transferred in waste-energy transferred through respiration
4 of 12
how do you calculate energy transferred as a percentage?
energy transferred =energy transferred ÷total energy taken in X 100
5 of 12
how do you calculate biomass?
total biomass= mass f one organism X number of organisms
6 of 12
whats a decomposer?
they are microorganisms.they have enzymes that break down dead organic material.
7 of 12
where do decomposers work best at?
in conditions that are warm moist and oxygen-rich.
8 of 12
whats a detritivore?
this are small animals for example earth worms, woodlice and maggots. they speed up decomposition by shredding the dead material into very small pieces.
9 of 12
how is carbon removed from the environment?
through photosynthesis
10 of 12
how is carbon released into the atmosphere? 3 different ways.
respiration-organisms respire to release energy from their food. decomposition-decomposers release carbon dioxide when they break down organisms' remains. combustion-when fossil fuels are burned ,trapped carbon is released into the atmosphere as CO2
11 of 12
which parts of marine animals might form limestone?
marine animals convert CO2 dissolved in the ea water into calcium carbonate to make wheels and bones.when organisms die there shells are deposited on sea bed.eventually sediment builds up to form limestone.
