unit 1 biology lipids

?
What are triglycerides?
have one molecule of glycerol as a hydrophilic head, and 3 hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails.
1 of 7
What is the structure of a fatty acid like ?
one carbon, with a double bond to oxygen, and a single bond to OH. then an r group, representing a hydrocarbon tail.
2 of 7
How do these bonds form?
condensation reaction
3 of 7
What happens in the formation of a triglyceride?
Joins glycerol with fatty acid to make it. An ester bond forms between the two, releasing a molcule of water. This process must happen three times to join three tails, and form a triglyceride
4 of 7
What are the lipids mainly in the plasma membrane>
Phospholipids
5 of 7
What are phospholipids made up of?
it has the glycerol head and two fatty acid tails, however the third tail was replaced by a phosphate group, which is attatched to the glycerol.
6 of 7
What is the emulsion test?
finding lipids, shake it with some ethanol for 1 min, then pour into water, any lipid will show up as a milky emulsion, more lipid there is, the clearer the milky emulsion.
