Describe the role and features of the capillaries.
connect arteries and veins. only one epithelial cell thick. blood cells pass through them in single file. diffusion occurs across the wall. muscle tissues and the kidneys have a greater amount of capillary networks than do connective tissue.
1 of 7
Describe the role of veins.
carry de-oxygenated blood back to the heart (with exception of the pulmonary vein which carries oxygenated blood to the heart).
2 of 7
Structure of veins.
3 layers. Tunica Adventitia - connective tissue, collagen & elastic fibres. Tunica Media - smooth muscle & elastic fibres. Tunica Intima - smooth endothelial cells.
3 of 7
Describe the role of arteries.
carry blood away from the heart. most common and largest artery, the aorta.
4 of 7
Structure of arteries.
same as veins but the Tunica Intima is more elastic.
5 of 7
Endocytosis
process in which a substance gains entry into a cell without passing through the cell membrane. 3 types: Pinocytosis, phagocytosis, receptor mediated endocytosis.
6 of 7
Exocytosis
process in which an intracellular vesicle moves to the plasma membrane subsequent fusion of the vesicular membrane and plasma membrane ensues.
