What did Freud think about dreams?
He believed that dreams were important, as they could unlock unconscious wishes and desires.

What is dreamwork?
Dreamwork is what the mind is doing while dreaming, keeping unconscious thoughts hidden and repressed.

What is the manifest content?
The story of the dream that the dreamer tells us.

Condensation?
Many ideas appearing as one idea in a dream.

Latent content?
The underlying meaning of the dream, or the hidden content.

What is displacement?
Something unimportant that appears to be so, shifting attention.

Secondary Elaboration?
Using ideas from dreamwork to build a whole story, making sense of it, which gets in the way of understanding the latent content.

Free Association?
A method used by Freud, where the patient is encouraged to express a flow of consciousness.

Slip of the tongue?
When somebody uses the wrong word for something- these could uncover unconscious thoughts.

Pros of Freud's theory
- Unique methods found data that was difficult to access (unconscious wishes and desires) - He gathered in depth and detailed information (valid)

- Biased sample - His concepts were unmeasurable

What is the activation-synthesis model?
A model of dreaming where the brain is active but no sensory information goes in. The brain puts information in to make sense of the random neuron firing

Random Activation
During REM sleep neurons are active randomly.

Sensory blockade/random activation
When no information enters through the senses and the body is paralysed and there is no movem

Strengths and Activation-synthesis hypothesis
- Has strong evidence, like animals scans - Development of the theory (dreams had meaning, according to Hobson, to create new ideas) -

- Anecdotal evidence - Lucid dreaming -Young children
