What are Participation Rates?
Participation Rates are how many people take part in sport or other physical activities

How does age affect Participation Rates?
Older people are more physically limited in the sports they can choose and there is much more choice for 16 to 30 year olds. Young people often have more time to spare as people get older and have careers and families, there's less time available.

How does disability affect Participation Rates?
Having a disability can limit the physical activities you are able to do. The opportunities in sport and access to sporting facilities for disabled people were limited. Now, there are many schemes set up to give them more opportunities.

How does gender affect Participation Rates?
Many women's sports have a lower profile than men's sports so there are fewer role models to inspire younger generations to take up sport. There's also fewer opportunities and less money for women to do sport at a higher level.

How does ethnicity affect Participation Rates?
The culture you grow up in will have an effect on what sports you participate in - if you're friends or family play a particular sport, you'll be more likely to play that sport too.

How does your socio-economic group affect Participation Rates?
Sports can be expensive due to specialist equipment,correct facilities and how easy it is to access facilities. This means some people can't afford to take part.

What is Commercialisation?
Commercialisation means making money.

What is Sponsorship?
Sponsorship deals means companies can associate their names with the prestige of successful sportspeople and teams, which helps the sponsor make more money.

Give an advantage of Sponsorship.
These deals means big money for sports - which can be spent on development. Sponsorship money also means players can be paid good wages and they can train full time. This benefits everyone as they will perform better.

Give a disadvantage of Sponsorship.
Sometimes, the money is only available for the top players and teams, so will only benefit the elites and not the sport as a whole.

How does the media play a role in Sponsorship?
The more media coverage a sport gets, the more people will watch it. This makes sponsorship more valuable as it can reach a larger audience.

Describes advantages of the media in sport.
The media pay for rights to cover sporting events, which provides investment for sports to develop at lower levels. Media coverage makes more people aware of the sport so more people may play it. Elite performers inspire younger generations.

Describes disadvantages of the media in sport.
The media can hold so much power over sport that they can change things. More fans watching on the TV or the Internet mean fewer fans buying tickets. This means losses in ticket sales for the sport and a poorer atmosphere for the spectators.

What is Sportsmanship?
Sportsmanship means being honest, abiding by the rules and treating your opponents with respect.

What is Gamesmanship?
Gamesmanship is gaining an advantage by using tactics that are unfair but aren't against the rules. Doesn't usually result in punishment

What is Deviance?
Deviance is behaviour that goes against the moral values or laws of the sport. Deviance is punished by sport officials to discourage this behaviour.

What are some consequences of Deviance?
For serious offences like using performance enhancing drugs, performer may receive a suspension or ban as well as having to pay a fine. Other consequences include being sent off or given warnings.
