what is the definition of homeostasis?
Regulation of the bodys internal environment
1 of 17
what is the internal environment?
refers to fluid which allows life sustaining changes and surround the cells
2 of 17
what are some regulatory mechanisms?
negative feedback mechanism and positive feedback mechanism
3 of 17
what is negative feedback mechanism?
a reaction that causes a decrease in function, for example if blood pressure increases above normal the change causes a decrease in blood pressure to bring it back to normal
4 of 17
what is body heat produced by?
contractions of sriated muscles, metabolic reactions in liver, chemical reactions in digestive system
5 of 17
how does heat loss occur?
through skin, exhaled breath , urine and faeces
6 of 17
what is body temp regulated by?
negative feedback mechanism
7 of 17
what is the role of hypothalamus?
produces and releases inhibiting hormones which stop and start the production of other hormones through the body
8 of 17
what is the role of autonomic system?
it is regulated by the hypothalamus. It regulates bodily functions such as heart rate ,digestion, respiratory rate ect
9 of 17
what are the effects of shivering?
This happens when the core body temperature drops , skeletal muscle makes small movements to expand energy and create warmth to maintain homeostasis
10 of 17
what is blood glucose level controlled by?
insulin and glucagon
11 of 17
where is insulin produces?
pancreas
12 of 17
what does insulin do?
reduces blood glucose levels, secretion is stimulated by an increase in blood glucose level for example after a meal
13 of 17
what does glucagon do?
increases blood glucose levels, secretion is stimulated by a low blood glucose level and exercise. wa
14 of 17
what is hypothermia?
when the body looses heat faster than it produces heat, causing a dangerously low temperature
15 of 17
what hypothermia caused by?
taying out in the cold too long. Being unable to get out of wet clothes or move to a warm, dry location
16 of 17
what is dehadration?
when the body looses more fluids than he or she takes in
