Unit 3- Anatomy and Physiology

?
What is a cell?
The basic unit of living material
1 of 9
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Holds the cell and its contents together. Controls the movement of substances into and out of cell.
2 of 9
What is the nucleus?
The central part of the cell, which is enclosed in a membrane and is usually darker than the rest of the cell because it contains genetic material.
3 of 9
What are ribosomes?
Only visible with an electron microscope and appear as black bodies located on the rough ER, or lying free in the cytoplasm. They contain different forms of RNA and their role is to manufacture proteins, as instructed by the DNA in the nucleus.
4 of 9
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)?
Transports materials to and from different parts of the cell. Rough ER- studded with ribosomes. Smooth ER- has no attached ribosomes and is involved in the metabolism of lipids or fats.
5 of 9
What is the Mitochondria?
spherical or rod-shaped bodies scattered in the cytoplasm, concerned with energy release.
6 of 9
What are centrioles?
organelles that play an important role in spindle formation during cell division.
7 of 9
What are lysosomes?
Small vesicles produced by part of the Golgi apparatus. They can travel freely throughout the cell and, by releasing their contents they can destroy damaged organelles and even entire cells- this is because they contain powerful enzymes.
8 of 9
What is the Golgi apparatus?
Responsible for packaging proteins for delivery to other organelles. It appears as a series of flattened, fluid-filled sacs stacked like pancakes. Also responsible for producing lysosomes.
