UNIT 2 - Individual Differences - MENTAL ILLNESS

I study the WJEC Psychology course and as you may know, there is not a specific revision guide for this exam board in Psychology. My teacher made us two revision guides as she works for the exam board and they are actually looking to publish them for everyone to see. I have picked out key words from each topic in each unit and defined them so you can test yourself. In my opinion key words are everything and they get you very far so I hope this helps you all :)

Statistical Infrequency
A definition of abnormal behaviour based around behaviour that is statistically rare.

Deviation from Social Norms
Abnormal behaviour defined by a group norm/not behaving in a way that society would expect e.g. kissing strangers.

ADHD (Extreme) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
A childhood disorder characterised by high levels of activity and failutre to concentrate.

Unipolar Depression
Extreme feelings of sadness and low self esteem.

Bipolar Disorder
Extreme feeling of sadness and low self esteem alternating with periods of mania.

Schizophrenia
Serious mental illness chracterised by disruptions in psychological functioning.

Phobias
An anxiety disorder/ a persistent and unreasoanble fear of an object or situation.

Abnormal
implies something is undesirable and requiring change. Methods must be objective. It must not depend on anyone's opinion or point of view. It should also produce the same results on whoever applies it.
