Dementia
- Describes symptoms associated with damage to the function of the brain, such as memory loss. -A progressive disease; more parts of the brain are damaged over time.

What can cause dementia?
A stroke can cause Dementia; when the brains blood supply is restricted, brain cells begin to die.

Alzheimers
- Most common cause of dementia. - Proteins called plaques and tangels build up in brain --> shortage of chemicals in brain which affects the transmition of signals.

Effects of Alzheimers disease; Early stage
- Decline in short term memory. - Difficulty completing routine tasks. - Impairment in thinking/ problem solving.

- Informal help with everyday tasks. - Medication. - Counselling. - Memory clinics.

- Language impairement. - Lack of judgement. - Emotional outbursts. - Changes in behaviour. - Agitation.

- Community/ specialist nurse visits. - Respite care. - Medication. - Support in the home with personal care.

- Unable to recognise family members. - Unable to feed or care for self. - Lack of control of bodily functions. - Almost total loss of memory. - Death.
