What happens in the first step?
The terminal carboxylate of ubiquitin links to the sulphurhydryl group of ubiquitin activating enzyme by a thioester bond.
1 of 5
What happens in the second step?
The activated ubiquitin is shuttled to sulphurhydryl group of the ubiquitin conjugating enzyme
2 of 5
What happens in the third step?
Ubiquitin protein ligase catalyses transfer of ubiquitin from the ubiquitin conjugating enzyme to an E-amino group on the target protein
3 of 5
What are the three enzymes used in ubiquitin tagging?
Ubiquitin activating enzyme, Ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, Ubiquitin protein ligase
4 of 5
What happens to the protein when ubiquitin is binded to it?
It is marked for destruction by phagocytes or myocytes
