U4: Populations: Investigating Populations

?
What are the three factors to consider when using a quadrat?
The size of the quadrat to use; The number of sample quadrats to record within the study area; The position of each quadrat within the study area.
1 of 5
Why is random sampling important?
It is important that sampling is random to avoid any bias collecting data. Avoiding bias ensures that the data obtained are valid.
2 of 5
What three steps are essential in the method of random sampling?
1) Lay out two long tape measures at right angles, along two sides of the study area. 2) Obtain a series of coordinates by using random numbers. 3) Place a quadrat at the intersection of the coordinates and record the species in it.
3 of 5
How does random sampling help to measure abundance?
Abundance in the number of individuals of a species within a given space. It can be measured in several ways, but two key methods are frequency, and percentage cover.
4 of 5
What is the mark-release-recapture equation?
Estimated popn size= Total no of individuals in 1st sample X total no in 2nd sample/ number of marked individuals recaptured
