An area of low pressure of the southeast of Pohnpei developed into a fully-fledged tropical storm.

On the 8th of November 2013 it became a category 5 tropical storm also known as a super typhoon

What were the social impacts?
- more than 7000 people were killed
- 1.9 million people were left homeless and more than 6 million displaced
- there was an outbreak of disease
- other areas said that there population had doubled due to refugees
- looting

- economic impact was estimated at $5.8 billion
- 6 million people lost their source of income
- crops were destroyed
- storm destroyed 30,000 fishing boats
- airport was damaged impacting tourism

- floods damaged and destroyed homes and buildings
- 71,000 hectares of farmland was affected
- thousands of trees were uprooted leading to a massive release of co2

What hazards occurs due to the result of the typhoon?
- floods occurred due to the remaining water from the typhoon
- a storm surge also occurred some at 4m high swept through the city causing further destruction and killing more people

What is the link to vulnerability?
The Philippines is a low income country (LIC). This means they are more vulnerable to natural hazards because they don't have the money to protect their buildings and prevent damage.

What is the link to climate change?
When climate change increases, it causes an increase in natural hazards. Last year there were around 20 typhoons in the Philippines whereas in 2010 there were only 7 typhoons.

What were the short term responses?
- the government evacuated people to the Tacloban indoor stadium. This however was not effective as it flooded
- emergency aid supplies were distributed quickly after the disaster
- within two weeks, over 1 million food packs and 250 000 litres of drinki

What were the long term responses?
- buildings were to be rebuilt to be stronger and more resistant to future tropical storms
- replant mangrove trees
- more cyclone shelters were also built
