What is unemployment?
The number of people able and willing to work, but not able to find a paying job. It doesn't include full-time students, the retired, children and those actively looking for a paying job

Structural unemployment
Happens when people have the wrong skills for the employment on offer, or are in the wrng place to take up other employment. Usually associated with declining industries and structural change e.g. mining, ship building

Cyclical unemployment
Caused by a downturn in the economic cycle. Not as much is being spent, so less is produced

Frictional unemployment
People between jobs. It is always present, and without it the economy would be static and wouldn't gow

Regional unemployment
Rate of unemployment in different areas throughout the UK. Often linked to declining industries and structural change

Seasonal unemployment
Occurs when there is a seasonal variation in demand, and people are not employed all year round e.g. tourism
