PROCEDURAL, SEMANTIC AND EPISODIC

This is NOT CONSCIOUS. It is IMPLICIT. Actioned based - knowing how to do something like swim. More resistant to forgetting. Non-Declarative

What is a study for Procedural Memory?
CLIVE WEARING - famous musician who suffered from a rare brain infliction. Some of the procedural memories he stored like playing the piano he could still do (procedural). Wouldn't say he could play (declarative)

What is Semantic Memory?
CONSCIOUS. EXPLICIT (intentially recall). FACTS eg. birthday or capital cities but don't know when you aquired them. KNOWING WHAT + MEANING OF WORDS

What is a study for Semantic Memory?
BOWER ET AL. Investigated semantic organisation in LTM. 2 groups of pp's were given same list of words, presented diff - random, hierachically. Organised - higher recall 73 words, random - 21 words. LTM is semantically arranged

What is Episodic Memory?
CONSCIOUS. EXPLICIT. KNOWING THAT. 2 types of episodic memory - AUTIBIOGRAPHICAL - specific life events, EXPERIMENTAL - lists of words that we have learnt but tied to an event. FLASHBULB - detailed and vivid memories that are stored after 1 occasion

What is a study for Episodic Memory?
CONWAY: investigate flashbulb memory of margaret thatchers resignation. 923 pps interviewed, after event. 11m later, interviewed for accuracy + vivid. 86% accurate memories, could be considered flashbulb memory
