Why is secondary storage needed?
Because main memory is volatile, and certain programs/data need to be stored long term after the computer is switched off.
1 of 10
What does magnetic storage use to store data?
Magnetic particles to create a magnetic field, around several platters on a spindle, that is modified/read using read/write heads.
2 of 10
What are the advantages of magnetic storage?
They have large capacities, but are often the cheapest option. There is a relatively high data access speed and magnetic tapes can hold data for up to thirty years.
3 of 10
What are the disadvantages of magnetic storage?
Its not as portable, have moving mechanical parts (less durable), and can lose data near strong magnetic fields.
4 of 10
How does optical storage store data?
It uses pits (1s) and lands (0s) to represent the data in a spiral on a disk, using a laser that reflects off the disk to read them.
5 of 10
What are the advantages of optical storage?
Relatively cheap more so if less than 10GB needs to be stored (per media item), highly portable, ideally sized for movies and immune to magnetic fields.
6 of 10
What are the disadvantages of optical storage?
Not cheap when terabyte amounts need to be stored, slow to write and very slow to access, easily scratched and a user cannot write over stored data.
7 of 10
How does solid state storage store data?
It uses electronic cicuits and switches to represent data in binary, all contained and stored directly on silicon microchips. This is called Flash Memory.
8 of 10
What are the advantages of solid state storage?
Very portable, large capacities (especially in solid state drives), highly durable, has the fastest access time, and produce no noise pollution.
9 of 10
What are the disadvantages of solid state storage?
They are the most expensive form of storage, and have limited amounts of erase/write cycles due to the use of ever increasing amounts of voltages.
