Play is a vital activity in children developing age appropriate skills and understanding the world.

There are 5 stages in play outlined by the sociologist Mildred Parten

What stage/age is solo play and what does it involve?
Why is this stage important?
First stage is solo play = 0-2 yrs.
The child is not engaged or actively playing with others at all. They remain stationary or engage in random movements with no objects.
This is important for setting the stage for future play.

What stage is solitary play/ age this play occurs what does it involve?
Why is this stage important?
Second stage is solitary play = 2-3years
Children with play alone with toys and be uninterested of what others around them are doing. This stage is important as it teachers children how to entertain themselves.

what does it involve?
why is this stage important?
This is the third stage of play = 2 and half to 3 and a half years.
this involves children playing side-by-side from one another, but a lack of group involvement. with play with toys and mimic one another.
This is important for gradually starting to lear

why is it important?
This is the 4th stage of play = 3-4 years
children will begin to play together but not towards the same goal. will be more interested playing with others. Children may trade toys and talk. Important as it develops cooperation/ language development

why is it important?
Cooperative play is the 5th stage= 4-6 years
play becomes organized into groups and teamwork. children are interested in playing with others. Normally a leader in the group.

Social skills are the skills we use everyday to interact and communicate with others.

associative play is important for problem solving skills.

Solitary play is good for ran only child as they learn to entertain themselves.
