Types of Mutations

?
What is a substitution mutation?
Where one or more bases are swapped for another
1 of 10
What is a mutation?
A change to the nucleotide sequence of DNA
2 of 10
What is this ? 'a sequence of bases is moved from one location in the genome to another'
Translocation
3 of 10
What does degenerate mean?
Some amino acids are coded for by more than one DNA triplet
4 of 10
What is a mutagenic agent?
Something that increases the rate of a mutation
5 of 10
What are the two types of gene that control cell division?
Tumour suppressor genes and proto-oncogenes
6 of 10
How do tumour suppressor genes slow down cell division?
They produce proteins which stop cells dividing or causes apoptosis
7 of 10
What do proto-oncogenes do?
They produce proteins which make cells divide
8 of 10
How does hypermethylation cause tumours?
Transcription cannot happen when tumour suppressor genes are hypermethylated which means proteins for slowing down cell division aren't made. This causes uncontrollable cell division and tumours develop
9 of 10
How does oestrogen cause breast cancer?
Oestrogen stimulates cell division
