How does an Optical microscope work?
They use light to form an image.
1 of 19
What is the maximum resolution of an Optical microscope?
0.2 micrometres (approximately)
2 of 19
What organelles CANNOT be viewed by an Optical microscope?
smaller organelles- ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes.
3 of 19
What is the maximum useful magnification of an Optical microscope?
x1500
4 of 19
How does an Electron microscope work?
They use electrons to form an image.
5 of 19
Do Electron microscopes have a higher or a lower resolution than Optical microscopes?
Electron microscopes have a higher resolution than Optical microscopes.
6 of 19
What is the benefit of a higher resolution?
You get a more detailed image, meaning you can look at more organelles.
7 of 19
What is the maximum resolution of an Electron microscope?
0.0002 micrometres (approximately)
8 of 19
What is the maximum useful magnification of an Electron microscope?
x1500,000 (approximately)
9 of 19
Do electron microscopes produce a black/white image or a coloured image?
They produce a black/white image, however they can be coloured by a computer.
10 of 19
What are the two types of electron microscopes called?
Transmission electron microscopes and Scanning electron microscope.
11 of 19
How do TEM's work?
They use electromagnets to focus a beam of electrons, which is then transmitted through the specimen.
12 of 19
How so SEM's work?
They scan a beam of electrons across the specimen. This knocks off electrons from the specimen, which are gathered in a cathode ray tube to form an image.
13 of 19
When using a TEM, some parts of the image appear darker. Why?
The darker parts appear darker because they're denser, so they absorb more electrons.
14 of 19
Why are TEM's good?
They give high resolution images , so you can see the internal structure of the organelles. Such as chloroplasts.
15 of 19
Why aren't TEM's good at viewing living organisms?
Because you have to view the specimen in a vacuum.
16 of 19
DO SEM's produce 2-D or 3-D images?
They can produce 3-D images.
17 of 19
Do SEM's give a lower or higher resolution than TEM's?
SEM's give a lower resolution than TEM's.
18 of 19
What is good about SEM's?
SEM's can be used on thick specimens.
