Episodic memories are associated with the hippocampus and the temporal lobe. The temporal lobe flares up when episodic memories are being used

Problems with evidence from patients with brain-damage
It is difficult to reach a firm conclusion by studying brain damaged patients. The difficulty with studies of amnesiacs, is that it is difficult to be certain of the exact parts of the brain that have been affected until a patient has died.

Distinguish episodic and semantic memories
Researchers have sought to examine the relationship between episodic and semantic memories by studying new patients with Alzheimer’s disease and found some patients have the ability to retain semantic memories and not episodic.
