how many types of long term memory are there?
three
1 of 18
who was it that suggested this?
Tulving
2 of 18
does this support or not support the multi store memory model?
does not support
3 of 18
what are the three types of long term memory identified by Tulving?
Semantic, Episodic and Procedural
4 of 18
what does episodic memory account for?
day to day happenings. specific events that have happened. likened to a diary.
5 of 18
what are the three characteristics of episodic memories?
they are 'time-stamped', they involve people, faces, names and words, they require conscious recall in order to be remembered.
6 of 18
what does semantic memory account for?
facts with semantic meaning. General knowledge. eg knowing what words mean
7 of 18
why is semantic memory different to episodic?
because it isn't time stamped nor is it specific. it is just a very broad sense of knowledge of specific things
8 of 18
what does procedural memory account for?
our memory for actions or skills; usually physical activities e.g. driving a car or riding a bike
9 of 18
what sets procedural memory apart from the other two types of LTM?
it doesn't require conscious recall. often the actions and behaviours come almost like reflexes.
10 of 18
why would it be hard to explain the procedure of an action that we have in our procedural memory?
because we don't consciously think about it, its hard to explain the little steps involved in performing the action.
11 of 18
what are the names of the two patients that support tulvings theory or the long term memory stores?
Clive Wearing and HM
12 of 18
what was the matter with them?
they were amnesia patients
13 of 18
which symptoms supported the theory or multiple LTM stores?
the fact that their procedural and semantic memories were in tact however their episodic memories were very poor
14 of 18
give examples of these symptoms
they knew what words meant e.g. the concept of what a dog is and they were able to do things like tying their shoe laces or playing a musical instrument however they couldn't remember situations or specific conversations
15 of 18
why does this support Tulving?
because it shows that they must be separate memory stores because whilst one is damaged the others remained intact therefore they must be stored in different parts of the brain
16 of 18
why do PET scans support the theory of multiple LTM stores?
Tulving carried out an experiment using brain scans and found that the different types of memories lit up different areas of the brain when they were being scanned.
17 of 18
how does the knowledge of different LTM stores better peoples lives?
the different aspects can be targeted for improvement and specific therapies. There is real life application.
