What is an extended family?
Similar to a nuclear family though made bigger through the addition of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. They all live in the same house or very close.

What is a foster family?
Long or short term. Checked as suitable carers. Carers are paid. Maintain contact with original family.

What is a single parent family?
Where children/child live with one parent at a time.

What is a nuclear family?
Parents and children who live together in a home separate from the rest of the family.

What is an adoptive family?
This provides a permanent home for a child whose parents are unable to do so. Come from a wide range of social backgrounds. Assume all rights of birth parents.

What is a step family?
When a couple, at least one of whom has a child, marry or cohabit. This new relationship may result in more children who become step-siblings. 10% of children live in this type of home.
