1 of 10
Developed types of confomity
Normative Influence: Compliance, going with majority to be accepted - think you're being judged by a group. Informational Influence: Going along with the majority when they provide information or evidence that you believe, happens with objective
2 of 10
Evaluation points
Distinguishing between compliance and internalisation. Research support for normative and informational influence. Normative influence may not be detected. Informational influence is moderated by type of task

Asch Study Procedure
123 US males told to call out which of the 3 lines they thought were the same length. 12/18 trails confederates gave incorrect answers
4 of 10
Findings
In the 12 trails there was a 33% conformity rate - 1/4 never conformed, 1/2 conformed on 6+, 1of20 conformed on all.
5 of 10
Variables that affect conformity
Group size: Little conformity where there were 1-2 confederates - conformity increase when there were 3 confederates - further increase had no impacts, suggests size of majority is only affective up to a point
6 of 10
Variables that affect conformity
Unanimity of the majority: If unanimity of majority was disturbed, conformity levels dropped
7 of 10
Variables that affect conformity
Difficulty of task
8 of 10
Evaluation points
Asch's research may be a child of it's time: Communism - other study suggest that conformity is more likely if the costs of not conforming aren't high. Problems with determining effect of group size: Limited range of majority sizes used
9 of 10
Evaluation points
Independent behaviour rather than conformity: Only 1/3 fully conformed - suggest study showed independent behaviour of individuals. Unconvincing confederates: Weren't actors - reduce validity as not believable - study where participant wore glasses
