Main reason for Wolsey's fall from power?

His failure to get an annulment for Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon

(1) Catherine of Aragon was not of child bearing age at 40, needed a male heir. (2) Believed in the biblical text which stated his marriage was full of sin as he had "uncovered his brothers nakedness" (Arthur's widow) (3) Infatuated with Anne Boleyn

Leviticus 20:21 "If a man takes his brother's wife, it is impurity; he has uncovered his brother's nakedness, they shall be childless." Doesn't apply to Henry, he had already fathered Mary

What was Wolsey's "primary strategy"?

Claimed that the original dispensation which was issued by Pope Julius II was insufficient in law. Pope didn't have the right to se aside divine law and ignore Leviticus.

Wolsey's second strategy: to persuade the Pope to transfer the case to England and delegate responsibility for the case to Wolsey worked. What did the Pope require?

He insisted that the case must be tried by two papal legates and he had the right to accept or reject the judgement
