The indo-australlian plate subducted beneath the eurasian plate, which caused an earthquake of magnitude 9. Sea floor uplifted and displaced water causing tsunami

250,000 deaths; 650,000 injuries; 2 million homeless; 1500 settlements destroyed

Spread of disease; tourism industry suffered; Local economies decline;

What were the immediate responses?
Run to higher ground; help save people; within 48hrs temporary hospitals were set up; bury dead bodies to prevent spread of disease; international charity aid sent out

What were the long-term responses?
Rebuil houses and towns; rebuild infrastructure; repair water'sewage pipes; roads cleared to provide better access to towns; early warning system installed to reduce impacts in future.
