Nuclear radiation comes from the nucleus of an atom. Substances that give out radiation are said to be radioactive. There are three types of nuclear radiation?
1) alpha 2) beta 3) gamma
1 of 6
What are the penetration levels of each of the nuclear radiation?
Alpha radiation is the least penetrating and can be stopped by thing materials such as paper. Beta radiation is moderately penetrating and can penetrate thin alluminium, gamma raditation is most penetrating radiation and can be stopped by thick lead
2 of 6
How does ionisation generally take place?
The molecule looses 1 or more of its electrons.
3 of 6
What is a use of Alpha radiation?
Smoke detectprs/alarms.
4 of 6
What is a use of Beta radiation?
Tracers and monitoring the thickness of materials.
5 of 6
What is a use of Gamma radiation?
Cancer treatment, testing equipment and sterilisation of medical equipment.
