SD (AO1) Briefly, what is SD?
it is a form of counter-conditioning whereby the therapist attempts to replace the fear response with an alternative and harmless one such as relaxation.

The therapist and the client will draw up a hierarchy of fears (usually around five) starting with the least feared and moving up to the most feared.

The therapist will gradually expose the patient to the threatening situation under relaxed conditions until the anxiety reaction is extinguished.

As the patient has been taught how to relax themselves they can use this to counteract the fear they feel when exposed to the stimuli. As a person can not feel anxiouse and relaxed at the same time they are gradually able to overcome there fear as th

The covert method is where the client imagines the stimuli instead of literally being exposed to it.

1. patient is taught how to relax (muscles and breathing), as anxiety is not compatible with relaxation. 2. Therapist and client draw up hierarchy of fears (AKA desensitization hierarchy)

3. patient works their way through the hierarchy visualising/being exposed to the stimuli and engaging in relaxation 4. eventually they will be able to relax through the most feared scenario.

Flooding is where a person is exposed to their phobia without the possibility of escape until the fear response is extinguished.
