The Treaty of Versailles
It officially ended the war between the allies and Germany. Signed in 1919 and cast a shadow over Germany politics for the next 21 years, it also helped in causing WW2. Even as the treaty was being drawn up people feared it would cause a war

Lost Land
Germany lost land like Alsace and Lorraine in Europe. The lands taken from Germany were rich in coal and iron. Germany was not allowed to unite with Austria even if both sides wished for it.

Military consequences
German troops were not allowed in the Rhinelands. German army was limited to a 100,000 men and could not leave Germany. It was not allowed tanks, submarines, air force or heavy artillery

Other terms
Had to accept responsibility for damage caused to the allies . It had to agree to reparations to help rebuild the allies countries after devastation.

The creation of the republic
Prince Max asked the allies to agree to give time for peace negotiations, in this time German Politics moved on. The result of Germany's political turmoil was the creation of weimar republic.

The KPD
The KPD was a new party, most Germans were petrified by the red plague of communism spreading in Russia and the freikorps had units to fight in the east against communists invasions. KPD meetings would be attacked by private armies of other parties

The spartacist revolt
The political atmosphere was so violent that when a spartacist-led revolt broke out in Berlin, Ebert moved the government to the town of weimar for safety. The freikorps was asked to deal with the spartacist, both Luxenburg and Liebknecht were killed

The structure of the weimar constitution- president
To be voted in by elections every seven years, Chosen as a person and not a party representative, chooses the chancellors, can use article 48 in emergency to suspend constitution and rule by decree, can take control of the army in an emergency.

chooses the ministers that run the country,with his ministers he can put laws to the reichstag, needs majority in reichstag to pass these laws.

elected by a secret ballot of electors every four years, votes are cast for a party and not a person and a party gets a seat for every 60,000 vote cast for them, votes are sorted by proportional representation, passes the laws of the country.

chosen by the chancellor, formulates laws by the reichstag.

18 local regions with a local parlaiment to decide issues in the region and they ran their own eeduation, police, judiciary, federal law always overrides the law of the land if they conflicted.
