why is the loss of water by transpiration unavoidable?
plants exchange gases with the atmosphere via their stomata for photosynthesis and this is essential for making sugars

what is a xerophyte?
a plant that is adapted to reduce water loss so that it can survive very dry conditions

1. most stomata close at night where there is no light for photosynthesis 2. deciduous plants shed their leaves in the winter when the ground could be frozen and temperatures are too low for photosynthesis

1. a waxy cuticle - reduces evaporation through epidermis, 2. stomata found on the underside of leaves reducing evaporation due to direct heating from the sun.

1. leaf rolled to trap air inside, 2. thick waxy cuticle reduce water evaporation from surface, 3. trapped air in centre with high WVP, 4. hairs on lower surface reduce air movement, 5. stomata in pits trap air with moisture close to stomata

what is translocation?
the transport of assimilates throughout the plant, in the phloem tissue.

releases sucrose into the phloem

what are parenchyma cells?
relatively unspecialised plant cells with living contents and him, permeable cell walls

what are their three uses?
may be able to photosynthesise, store food or support young plants.

where are they found?
all over - palisade parenchyma are found just below the epidermis in leaves, they're found in the vascular bundle

what is found just inside the endodermis of the vascular bundle and what are they calle?
a layer of meristem cells (cells that remain able to divide) called the pericycle

where else are meristem cells found in the vascular bundle?
in the cambium located between the xylem and the phloem

what happens to the vascular bundle in mature woody plants?
they become continuous forming complete rings of vascular tissure

to provide support and flexibility to withstand the bending forces
