What is the protein structure and and many polypeptide chains does this consist
It is a QUATERNARY structure and consists 4 polypeptide chains
2 of 8
What do these polypeptide chain each consist and what is the benefit of this?
Each polypeptide contains a HAEM GROUP made up of IRON ION. This therefore can have a higher binding affinity of oxygen.
3 of 8
What is the function of the IRON ION?
This attracts and holds 1 oxygen molecule.
4 of 8
What does the term Association mean in terms of the Haemoglobin?
Meaning for instance if there is a high concentration of oxygen on the outside than the inside of the cell, the oxygen will diffuse and ASSOCIATE with the haemoglobin
5 of 8
What does the term Dissociation mean in terms of the Haemoglobin?
Meaning that it will NOT associate with the haemoglobin therefore having a lower binding affinity.
6 of 8
Explain Fully the transport of carbon dioxide?
- CO2 + H20 -> Bicarbonate. - This Lowers Ph in the blood. -Therefore a change in the structure of the hemoglobin - this then allows the oxyhaemoglobin to become DISSOCIATED from the haemoglobin
7 of 8
What is the equation for the transport of oxygen via hemoglobin?
OXYGEN + HEMOGLOBIN - > OXYHAEMAGLOBIN
