Haemoglobin takes up oxygen in a way that produces an S-shaped curve- showing the percentage saturation with oxygen. This is usual as in a standard liquid this line is directly proportional.

Partial pressure is a measurement used in estimating an amount of a particular gas where a mixture of gas is present. e.g. amount of oxygen in blood. It is measured in kPa.

When there is low partial pressures of oxygen the 4 polypeptides in haemoglobin are united very closely. so is difficult to load the first molecule of oxygen- this explains the s shape on the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve- inital shallow curve

When the first molecule binds to the haemoglobin it makes it easier for the next oxygen molecule to bind and so on. This leads to an increase in rate of haemoglobin binding and the curve steepens.

Why does the graph flatten off?
This happens because the probability of the oxygen colliding with an empty site reduces (sites 1-3 are full)
