What is transpiration?
The loss of water from plants
1 of 8
How is it caused?
It is caused by evaporation and diffusion inside the leaves
2 of 8
What does the loss of water cause?
A water shortage which means that more water is taken up by the plant roots
3 of 8
4 things that affect the rate of transpiration
Light intensity, Temperature, Air movement and Humidity
4 of 8
Light intensity effect
Increase in light intensity = faster transpiration rate. Because the stomata are open so water can escape
5 of 8
Temperature
Warmer it is the faster transpiration rate. Water particles have more energy to evaporate and diffuese
6 of 8
Air movement
More air movement means faster transpiration because if the air is sweeping away the water vapor in the air outside the leaf, this causes a lower concentration of water so more diffusion takes place
7 of 8
Humidity
If the air around the leaf is dry, then transpiration happens faster
