What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the movement of water up through the xylem of a plant from the roots up to the leaves.
1 of 17
Which four ways can you increase the rate of transpiration?
You can increase the rate of transpiration by; Having a high light intensity, increasing air movement (wind), increasing temperature and ecreasing the humidity.
2 of 17
What are the two adaptations of a plant that are used to redue water loss?
A waxy cuticle and having most stomata on the lower surface of a leaf reduce water loss.
3 of 17
What are stomata?
Stomata are tiny pores which let carbon dioxide in, and water vapour and oxygen out.
4 of 17
What controls the stomata?
Gaurd cells control the stomata. They close the stomata when its necessary.
5 of 17
What happens when water molecules move into the gaurd cells?
The gaurd cells swell due to the water and become turgid (this is caused by osmosis)
6 of 17
Which 4 minerals do plants need to be healthy?
Phosphate- for respiration and growth. Nitrate- to build protiens and growth. Potassium- For respiration and photosynthesis. Magnesium- For photosynthesis and chlorophyll.
7 of 17
What deficiency symptoms could a lack in these minerals cause?
Nitrate- Yellow leaves and poor growth. Phosphate- Poor root groth and purple leaves. Potassium- Poor flower and root growth, dicoloured leaves. Magnesium- Yellow leaves.

What is active transport?
Active transport is when particles move against a concentration gradient, and therefore requires energy which must be supplied by a cell.
9 of 17
How is this different to diffusion?
It is different to diffusion as diffusion moves down the concentration gradient and requires no energy in order to do this.
10 of 17
What conditions are needed for decay?
Warmer temperature, more oxygen, and moist conditions increases the speed of deay.
11 of 17
What is natural recycling?
Natural recyling is a biological process which occurs on a continuous basis within the natural environment. Organic matter is broken down by detritovores + small parts are eaten. Decomposers break this down+release compounds into soil used by plants.
12 of 17
What are the seven mechanisms used to prevent decay?
Canning, cooling, freezing, adding salt, vinegar and salt, and drying.
13 of 17
Whats an argument for selective breeding?
It can improve crops and livestock, eg increasing disease resistance or milk yeild.
14 of 17
What is an argument against selective breeding?.
It can have a negative effect on the organisms.
15 of 17
Name 3 methods of inensive farming.
Using herbicides, pesticides and battery farming are all methods of intensive farming.
16 of 17
What is organic farming?
Organic farming is a type of farming which relies upon more natural forms, without using chemical fertilisers or feed additives. This includes using manure, and farming free range livestock.
