What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water from a plant's surface, especially the leaves
1 of 8
How does light affect transpiration rate?
The lighter it is the faster the transpiration rate - this is because stomata open when its light to let CO2 in for photosynthisis
2 of 8
How does temperature affect transpiration rate?
The higher the temperature the faster the transpiration rate - warmer molecules have more energy so can evaporate faster - this increases the water potential gradient between the inside and outside of the leaf - making water diffuse out faster
3 of 8
How does humidity affect transpiration rate?
The lower the humidity the faster the transpiration rate - if the air around the plant is dry, the water potential gradient between the leaf and air is increased, which increases transpiration
4 of 8
How does wind affect transpiration rate?
The windier it is the faster the transpiration rate - lots of air movement blows the water molecules away from the plant which increases the water potential gradient
5 of 8
What is a potometre?
A piece of apparatus used to estimate the rate of transpiration
6 of 8
What is translocation?
The movement of solutes to where they're needed in a plant
7 of 8
What is another name for solutes?
Assimilates
