Transpiration

?
Briefly describe what transpiration is
The loss of water by evaporation from the leaves and stem
1 of 11
What is the transpiration steam?
When the water moves out of the xylem into the leaves where is evaporates from the walls of the mesophyll into air spaces, then the water vapour moves out into the air.
2 of 11
How come water moves in a continuous stream out of the plant?
As water moves out of the air spaces, the air spaces loose their water vapour potential and more water vapour moves in
3 of 11
What is the transpiration pull?
The pull of water rising up a tube against gravity due to the cohesion and adhesion forces acting on it, creating a capillary action.
4 of 11
What does the transpiration do, other than move the water?
It creates tension in the xylem which helps move the water from the soil into the roots
5 of 11
Describe the stomata and their role in transpiration
Pores in the leaves, involved in gas exchange and water loss. Turgor-driven process (low turgor, pores close, visa versa)
6 of 11
How does light intensity effect transpiration?
The more light intensity, the faster the plant will photosynthesise so the stomata all be open for gas exchange but as a result there will be more water loss. Thus, the more light intensity, the faster the rate of transpiration.
7 of 11
How does humidity effect transpiration?
If the environment is humid, the water vapour potential is higher than normal and so it reduces the water vapour potential gradient, thus transpiration rate is slowed.
8 of 11
How does temperature effect transpiration?
Increase in temp increases the kinetic energy of the water molecules, increasing rate of transpiration. The increase in temp also increaases the amount of WV the air can hold, meaning also an increase in transpiration.
9 of 11
How does air movement effect transpiration?
Leaves have a layer of trapped air around them, water vapour from the plant accumulates here. The more air movement, the more WV gets blown away, increasing rate of transpiration due to higher WV potential gradient
10 of 11
How does soil-water availability effect transpiration?
The less water available in the soil, the slower the rate of transpiration
