donates lone pair of electron to central metal ion. can be unidentate (NH3, Cl-), bidentate or multidentate (EDTA4-)

What is a coordiantion number and what does it mean for the shape of the ion?
number of coordinate bonds formed with metal ion. if 2 shape=linear, 3=square planar or tetrahedral and 6=octahedral

Why are complex ions coloured?
lingands split the 3d orbitals into 2 energy levels, when visible light hits some frequiencies are absorbed so the electrons jump up to higher level, others are reflected so this is the colour you see

How do you work out how much energy is absorbed for electrons to move to higher energy level? what affects the value?
E=hv E=energy absorbed, h=planck's constant, v=frequency of light absorbed. affected by: central metal ion, oxidation state, ligands and coordination number

How does spectrometery determine the concentration of a solution?
white light passed through filter (colour thats absorbed) through sample to colorimeter. more light absorbed=more concentrated

forms coordinate bonds with N in DNA preventing the double helix structure from unwinding

What affects complex ion stability?
1-multidentate ligands from more stable complex as entropy change, increasing number of paricles means more stability (chelate effect) 2-strength of coordinate bond 3-enthalpy change, bonds broken similar strength to bonds being made
