Transition metal definitions

?
Complex Ion
A central metal ion with a number of other molecules or ions surrounding it. the metal ion is acting as a Lewis Base
1 of 9
Ligand
An ion or a molecule with a lone pair of electron that forms a co-ordinate bond with a transition metal
2 of 9
Co-ordinate bond
A covalent bond in which both the electrons in the bond come from one of the atoms forming the bond.
3 of 9
Co-ordination number
The number of atom/ligands bonded to the metal ion
4 of 9
Bidentate ligand
The ligand uses two pairs of electrons to form two co-ordinate bonds with the metal ion
5 of 9
(triangle)E = hv
E = Energy, h= Planck's constant , v = Frequency

Features of Transition metal ions
1) Variable oxidation states , 2) the ions are coloured, 3) Catalysis(they make good catalysts , 4) Complex Formation
7 of 9
