What is Skills-Based Training
Training based on learning a skill i.e. using Microsoft. It is commonly offered in standard courses teaching ppts how to use a range of facilites based on current skill level.

What is Task-Based Training
Training based on learning how to do a particular task i.e. how to use a PDA. Designed for occasion so mainly used in-house. Skills acquired are very specific.

What is Face-to-Face/Instructor-Led Training
Formal training with an instructor and is a popualr but expensive option. Gives immediate help and feedback with interaction but lacks flexibility and if not immediately followed up may be forgotten.

What is On-the-Job Training
Learning while at work. Trainer from inside or outside comes and gives instructions. May involve observing colleague complete a task then carrying out similar task under supervision.

What is an In-House Course
These are specifically organised for an employee and are normally held on-site using an internal or external trainer . Allows for content of course to meet specific needs of organsiation. No travel and can take place at suitable time for employee.

Offered by local colleges or commercial companies. Allows an individual to meet and exchange ideas with people in different organisations.

What is E-Learning
Using electronic methods to teach a trainee. Growing in popularity as a person can learn when and where they want, no need to wait for relevant course. Inexpensive and does not disrupt day-to-day working. However, heavily graphics based.

What is an Online Tutorial
Many tutorials are available online for free or are very cheap. Trainees can study what they choose, at their own pace and in a small budget.

What is On-Screen Help
Commonly used as immediately available and free. Search question in natural language and be given explanation and examples of use. It is quick to use and user-friendly.

What is Interactive Video
Professional training provided at your computer. Makes use of facilites of DVD system. Users choose what to cover and when and users can make responses to reinforce understanding. Low stress, logical and easy to use.

What is a Software Manual
Widely available although rarely come free. Claim to teach all you need to know but vary in quality and not always easy to follow. Used when and where a user wants and progress made at own pace.

Commonly available for popular software. Give a step-by-step through basic functions of the program. Read anywhere or may be part of structured training programme.
