Tourism
Travel for recreational, leisure, health or business. Tourists are people who travel away from their home area for at least a day but for no more than a year.

More economically developed country e.g. UK, USA, Japan.

Mass tourism
Tourism on a large scale to one country or region. There is usually a particular purpose and a particular type of location, such as skiing in a mountain region. It relates to the development and consolidation stages of Butler's lifecycle model.

Community tourism
Sharing the natural resources of a local community with visitors from home and overseas for the sustainable benefit of that local community whilst conserving the natural environment and respecting the way of life.

Ecotourism
Environmentally friendly tourism. It caters for a niche, small but growing market of environmentally aware tourists.

Stewardship
The management of the environment on a large scale (from regional to global). It involves Government and local council planning.

Conservation
The careful and planned use of resources in order to manage the natural environment for future generations. It is essentially stewardship on a smaller and more manageable scale - individual people feel involved.

Extreme/adventure tourism
Involves visiting extreme environments with dangerous landscapes, small populations and difficult access. This is a rapidly growing sector of tourism. Around 20 million trips per year are 'extreme tourism'. E.g. Rainforest treking in Amazon, Brazil.

Human attraction
An attraction for tourists that has been built or made by humans, e.g. Blackpool Tower.

Physical attractions
An attraction for tourists that is natural - not built by humans, e.g. mountain range.
