Car ownership has increased and travel has become a lot cheaper so more people can afford to go on holiday

Smaller families are cheaper to take on holiday, life expectancy has risen so people have good pensions and can afford to travel, they also have more time

How have improvements in technology affected tourism?
Holiday destinations are more publicised and there is a larger variety, flying is much cheaper and easier to book online due to the internet and travel is much faster due to motorways and airports

How has globalisation affected tourism?
There are a wider variety of more unusual holiday destinations that people are more aware of and many countries have invested in better infrastructure for tourists e.g. expensive hotels and it is easier to travel abroad

Why are people attracted to cities?
There is a variety of culture (museums and art galleries), entertainment (bars, restaurants and theaters) and shopping. There may also be a famous landmark such as the Eiffel Tower. Examples are London, Paris, New York and Rome

Why are people attracted to mountain areas?
There is beautiful scenery and activities such as walking, climbing, skiing and snowboarding. Examples are the Himalayas, the Alps and the Rockies

Why are people attracted to coastal areas?
There are beaches, warm climates and activities like swimming, snorkeling, diving, water-sports, fishing and sunbathing. Examples include Spain, Portugal and the Carribean
