In this topic we focus on science as a belief system and in particular, whether and how it differs from other belief systems such as religion. We also examine the concept of ideology and how it has been used to understand belief systems.

What does Popper mean by 'falsificationism?'
Scientists set out to try and falsify existing theories, deliberately seeking evidence that would disprove them.

In what sense is the witchcraft among the Azande a closed belief system?
Evans-Pritchard points out that this belief system is highly resistant to challenges, that is, it is a closed system that cannot be overturned by the evidence.

Explain Mannheim's distinction between 'ideological thought' and 'utopian thought'.
Ideological though justifies keeping things as they are and reflects the position and interests of privileged groups. Utopian thought justifies social change and reflects the position and interests of the underprivileged.

What is false consciousness?
Ways of thinking (of the oppressed) that are the product of ideology (of the ruling class).

According to Mannheim, why is there a need for a 'free floating intelligentsia'?
Because they would not be attached to any particular interest group and therefore could represent the interests of society as a whole.

What does Gramsci see as the two sides of workers dual consciousness?
Ruling-class ideology and consciousness arising from exploitation and struggle.
