topic 4

?
What is the main difference between a hub and a switch?
they both join computers in a network but a switch sends data to specific computers instead of all the computers on a network
1 of 31
What is a router?
Joins multiple networks together
2 of 31
what are the three types of data transfer media?
metal wires, fibre optic cable and wireless
3 of 31
what are the two types of metal wires?
unshielded twisted pair and shielded twisted pair
4 of 31
What are the features of an unshielded twistwed pair?
thin wires to help cancel out interference, only suitable for small networks
5 of 31
What are the features of a shielded twisted pair?
wires have a copper braiding which protects the data signals form outside interuption, more expensive, better transmission speeds than unshielded
6 of 31
What are the features of fibre optic cables?
pulses of light that passes through thin glass fibres
7 of 31
What are the advantages of fibre optic cables?
The data travels much faster than with other wires, a large amount of data can travel through a small cable, a lack of electrical interference
8 of 31
What are the disadvantages of fibre optic cables?
The cost of cables and devices needed to connect the cable are alot greater than other media
9 of 31
What are the advantages of wireless networks?
Gives the freedom to work anywhere, global standards
10 of 31
What are the disadvantages of wireless networks?
high power consumtion, home networks have a limited range and there are many decurity problems
11 of 31
What are the main features of a LAN's network?
confined to a single building or site
12 of 31
What are the main features of a WAN's network?
spread over a wide geographical area,
13 of 31
What are the 4 network topologies?
Ring,Bus,Star and Mesh
14 of 31
Ring topology
All computers are arranged in a circle, data sent from one computer goes around the network till it reaches the right computer. + easy to add extra devices - a break in the network can cause the whole network to fail, faults are hard to locate
15 of 31
Bus topology
all devices are connected to a common shared cable + cost effective small amount of cable needed, easy to add extra devices - if there is a break in the backbone then the network cant be used
16 of 31
Star topology
central switch or router that all the computers are connected to + fault tolerant- when one cable fails the rest can continue to work - high costs due to more cables, if central device stops working then the network goes down
17 of 31
Mesh topology
Data can take several paths as multiple wires are connected to various computers
18 of 31
What are the features of a Peer-to-peer server?
Computers are conected to each other with no central management allows computers to easily share files with each other
19 of 31
What are the advantages of a Peer-to-peer server?
cost saving no server needed, easy to set up, not reliant on a server
20 of 31
What are the disadvantages of a Peer-to-peer server?
no central backups so users must take backups themselves, poorer security
21 of 31
What are the features of a client server?
a more powerful computer will store all the files and programs
22 of 31
What are the advantages of a client server?
better security, regular backups can be taken
23 of 31
What are the disadvantages of a client server?
more expensive software and servers
24 of 31
internet
large group of networks joined together, each network made of smaller networks. consists of hardware
25 of 31
world wide web
information sharing model thats built ontop of the internet
26 of 31
Intranets
Private networks only used by employees of the organisation
27 of 31
Extranets
these are networks that aren't just restricted to staff but can be used by certain members of the pubic such as customers, partners ect. via pastwords and user names
28 of 31
What are the advantages of networks?
share files, hardware and software easily, improved security, easier to backup files
29 of 31
What are the disadvantages of networks?
higher cost, network may fail if the server goes down
30 of 31
standards
things needed in order to keep a set of common features amoung hardware this allows hardware to be used with other hardware reducing costs

There's a spelling error on the 28th flash card, I think you meant to say public, not pubic lol
