How did Herschel contribute towards the discovery of waves outside the limits of visible light?
Herschel put dark coloured filters on his telescope to help observe the sun safely. He found that different coloured filters heated up his telescope, he wondered whether the different colours contained different amounts of heat.

How did Herschel test his idea?
He used a prism to split the sunlight into a spectrum and then put a thermometer on one of the colours. He found that the temperature rose as he moved the thermometer from red to violet. He also measured just beyond the red, he'd discovered infra red

How did ritter contribute towards the discovery of waves outside the limits of visible light
He discovered ultraviolet by using silver chloride, a substance that breaks down to give a black colour when exposed to light. He shown it turned black fasted when exposed to 'invisible visible' rays just beyond violet

What are visible light, infrared and ultraviolet radiations all a type of?
Electromagnetic radiations
4 of 10
What type of waves are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse
5 of 10
Why can electromagnetic waves travel easily through a vacuum?
They don't need particles to vibrate

What is the fastest electromagnetic waves can travel in a vacuum?
300,000 kilometres / s

Why does the colour of visible light depend on it's wavelength?
When the wavelength is longer than the wavelength of red light, humans can not see it. Such as ; microwaves, infrared and radiowaves.

The shorter the wavelength the higher the...
frequency e.g- ultra violet , xrays and gamma rays
