Keddie- Cultural deprivation is a ‘myth’ -WC children are culturally different, not culturally deprived, they fail because of unfair education system that is dominated by MC values. Some say not cultural deprivation but poverty+ material deprivation.

Children from poorer backgrounds more likely have lower intakes of energy, vitamins & minerals, meaning a weaker immune system and therefore more absences and difficulties in learning.

Cost of items such as uniform, transport and books places a heavy burden on poor families. Therefore these children may have to do with cheap equipment which could lead to bullying from peers and missing out on educational experiences.

Bourdieu
Both cultural and material uses- concept of ‘capital’ to explain why the m/c are more successful. MC have knowledge and attitude to understand education system. Economical and education capital- MC better equipped can get tuition so achieve higher.

Sulivan
Tested Bourdieu idea using questionnares on 465 pupils. She assessed their cultural capital, she found who read complex fiction and watched serious TV documentaries developed a wider vocab and greater cultural knowledge – indicating greater cultural.
