?
What is HCI?
Human Computer Interface
1 of 17
What are the methods of HCI?
Command Line Interface, Graphical User Interface (GUI), Touch Sensitive Screen, Bio-metric Device, Speech Recognition System, Natural Language Interface
2 of 17
Where can a Command Line Interface be used?
Expert using it to find information on network configuration / write small batch.
3 of 17
Where can a GUI be used?
For a primary school child using a maths program. Setting up a profile on a games console Customising a desktop/ application.
4 of 17
Where can a Touch Sensitive Screens be used?
In a museum allow customers or children to gather information. Mobile phones to dial.
5 of 17
Where can a Bio-metric Devices be used?
Retina scan / iris recognition to gain access to room Thumbprints to take out a library. Facial recognition at airports for identity purposes.
6 of 17
Where can a Speech Recognition Systems be used?
Voice control in car navigation systems – e.g. to plan route. Security systems e.g. to allow entry. Mobile phones – e.g. to dial the phone number of a friend. Doctors can use them to dictate notes directly into a computer.
7 of 17
Where can a Natural Language Interface be used?
Giving instruction, Asking question such as in expert systems.
8 of 17
What are the advantages to a Command Line Interface?
Fast to run. Needs very little overheads (memory / processor)
9 of 17
What are the disadvantages to Command Line Interface?
Need to know the commands a lot of typing
10 of 17
What are the benefits to a GUI?
Fun to use. Colourful. Easier to customize. making it as intuitive for a user as possible.
11 of 17
What the drawbacks to a GUI system?
Needs a powerful process. Can run slowly.
12 of 17
What are the benefits to a Touch Sensitive Screen?
Saves having to type. Quicker to enter information/fixed list of options. Easier for disabled people. No need for mouse and keyboard.
13 of 17
What are negatives of a Touch Sensitive Screen?
Might not have all the options needed. Dirty/damaged screen/ wet fingers. Screen requires re calibration.
14 of 17
What are the advantages to a Biometric device?
Individual. Difficult to copy. Better security, Accuracy. Can lose smart card - not thumb print.
15 of 17
What are the advantages to a Speech Recognition Software?
Quicker than typing. Allows people to enter text directly into a computer without using a keyboard. Can perform complicated tasks by dictation. Can empower disabled. Safer when driving as hands free doesn’t distract processing software.
16 of 17
What are the drawbacks to a Speech recognition Software?
Have to train computer to recognise voice which takes a long time. Delays in getting commands recognised. Rural accents lead to misunderstanding of commands. Similar sounding words or commands. Background noise. Security as people can hear password.
