What is a LAN?
Local Area Network, A computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, or office building.

What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network, A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area.

What is the meaning to intranet?
A private internet OR a closed / private network only accessible within the organisation.

What are the advantages of an intranet to a Health Care setting?
Allows consultants to access privileged information from home. Allows users access to information which non medical staff cannot have.Allows additional security to information as stays inside the hospital / health trust. Allows doctors to see X-rays

What are the advantages to a network manager?
The hospital’s IT manager can monitor what work staff are doing from a central point. IT manager can install software from a central point without going around each machine. Backups can be done centrally.

What is the impact of networks on a Businesses?
Getting data from another hard drive/server. Greater security by having one program controlling all computer access.Easier to backup data by being able to do it from one central location. Staff can work jointly on the same document at the same time.

What are the impacts of types of networks in the Home?
Online banking – 24/7, Allows access to online shopping, if you realise that you need more shopping after a shop closes, Teleworking – working from home via LAN / WAN, Entertainment – Network multiple machines together to enable game play.

What are advantages to the impact of a network has on email?
Ease of forwarding, Faster to send to other regions of the world. Can introduce viruses into the system. You can get a message saying that the email has been read. Cyber bullying / inappropriate content. Can send the same email to a group of people.

What are the disadvantages to the impact of a network has on email?
Spam / Phishing. Work/life balance. Can introduce viruses into the system. Physical items cannot be sent. Cyber bullying / inappropriate content. Organisation has to pay for internet access.

What is the impact of LAN on a Health Care setting?
X-rays and scan results are now available almost instantaneously across a hospitals LAN from radiography to a consultant’s room. This allows quicker and more efficient diagnosis.

What is another impact of LAN on a Health Care setting?
Internal communications across a hospital LAN. Faster and more efficient communication between all departments increasing efficiency of care.

Expert systems such as NHS direct are now available over the web,allows patients to access information without having to leave their own home

What is another impact of a WAN on Health Care?
Doctors’ surgeries can access blood test results from hospital pathology labs across the web.
