Topic 5 - Climate change

?
What is an Abiotic factor?
Physical and chemical factors like the climate and soil change
1 of 19
What is a biotic factor?
factors determined by organisms such as predation and competition
2 of 19
What is a community?
Population is a group of individuals of the same species found in an area
3 of 19
What is a niche?
The role of an organism in its environment
4 of 19
What are four ways to determine whether the climate is warming?
long temperature records, carbon dioxide, pollen analysis and dendrochronology
5 of 19
What are two benefits of long temperature records?
you can see the general increase in temperature over a short period of time, only record of temperature change
6 of 19
What are 3 disadvantages of long temperature records?
The equipment used in the 1600s was not as advanced as in the 21st century, the readings don't go back longer than the 1600s and readings were only taken in central england not in other countries
7 of 19
What is pollen analysis?
The study of living, fossil spores and pollen
8 of 19
What is peat?
the accumulation of partially preserved matter, mainly the remains of dead plants
9 of 19
What are the conditions in a peat bog?
Aerobic and acidic conditions
10 of 19
What does this mean?
The decay rate is slowed or stopped altogether
11 of 19
What is used to date pollen>
Carbon 14
12 of 19
What is Dendrochronology?
It is the study of tree rings
13 of 19
What do trees do?
They produce a new layer of xylem vessels by the division of cells underneath the bark
14 of 19
What does the diameter of the new xylem vessels mean?
The wider they are, the quicker the tree grows
15 of 19
What is ice coring?
the carbon dioxide levels are counted in ice that is formed in Antarctica
16 of 19
What is the greenhouse effect?
It is a natural phenomena that prevents the planet from getting too hot or too cold
17 of 19
What gases are in the atmosphere?
methane, Co2 and Water vapour
18 of 19
What other factors can affect climate change?
Greenhouse gases, aerosols, the degree of reflection, fraction of earth covered with ice and snow, the extent of cloud colour and changes in sun radiation
