What is diffrentiation?
The process by which cells become specialised.
1 of 8
What is totipotency?
The ability to produce all cell types, including all the specialised cells in an organism and extraembryonic cells (cells of placenta and umblical cord).
2 of 8
What is pluripotency?
The ability of a stem to produce all specialised cells in an organism expect extraembryonic cells as the genes for these cells have become inactivated.
3 of 8
What is a blastocyst and what kind of cells does it consist of?
It is a development from the zygote, the outer blastocyst layer goes on to form the placenta and the inner cell mass consists of 50 pluripotent cells.
4 of 8
When are cells from the zygote said to be totipotent?
When a human embryo has undergone three cell cycles it consists of eight identical cells which are said to be totipotent.
5 of 8
What it is multipotency?
They are self renewing by developing into multiple specialised cell types present in a specific tissue or organ. Most adult stem cells are multipotent stem cells.
6 of 8
What medicine can be made from stem cells?
Regenerative medicine can be made this includes replacing, engineering regenerating of human cells, tissues and organs to achieve a normal function.
7 of 8
What is therapeutic cloning?
This is somatic cell nuclear transfer, the patient needing a transplant would take one of their diploid cells. The nucleus would be fused with an ovum in which the nucleus has been removed, this is then stimulated to divide,& the stem cells extracted
