the idea that a few induviduals + groups control what stories are put into the news... the glasgow media group (GMG) have shown that the process of selecting what is included in the news isn't NEUTRAL.

1) people use social media more for NEWS than mainstream news comp (eg 500 million tweets per day)... 2) jornalists + reporters have busy schedules bcos they have to keep updating their stories... 3) getting a NEW story rather than the QUALITY.

1) media have power to REFUSE or ACCEPT to cover some issues... 2) GMG looked at bad news stories 1970s/80s: found own/journ acted as 'gatekeepers' deciding what info the public has access to... 3) some stories not covered bcos damaging to society

the media set social norms & want everyone to conform to them... those who don't conform are isolated (achieved in 2 ways) 1) encouraging CONFORMIST behaviour... 2) discouraging NON-CONFORMIST behaviour
